Guerrilla Gardening

WELCOME

What is Guerrilla Gardening?

Guerrilla Gardening

Within the evolution of greenspace in urban architecture, humans began creating greenspaces previously before the concept of “guerrilla gardening” was invented. People recovered land for agriculture long before the phrase "guerrilla gardening" was coined, whether as a political or environmental statement (Kuchta, D. M. 2022). Guerrilla gardening consists of raising food, plants, or flowers on land that the gardeners do not have the legal rights to. Guerrilla gardening, which mostly takes place in cities and was an important trend in the 1970s, aims to reclaim abandoned areas by growing native plants and enhancing the food options available to those who live in food deserts.(Kuchta, D. M. 2022). Guerrilla gardeners throughout history have been viewed as either heroes or annoyances depending on who controls the land. This can reflect on a person's point of view and how they see a positive outcome to their actions.

At the more casual end of the urban food growing movement, green activism and guerilla gardening concept creates a view upon  these activities and prospects that can result in backlash. This movement has evolved over many years and has fueled the expansion of food initiatives as well as more popular, officially recognised urban community gardens. These concepts are common in today's architecture and allow a great amount of benefits to be utilized by the environment and humans. The guerrilla gardening movement started the growth of the idea of greenspace architecture and is one of the most significant movements for the enviroment.
