Greenspace

Greenspace as a movement

The concept of greenspace was created from guerrilla gardening and had evolved into a greeted movement still today. When focusing on the interconnections that spark social movements for more environmentally friendly urban environments, individuals have a beneficial influence on the ecosystem. Green space is crucial and advantageous for exposing neighborhood residents to the natural environment. The idea of health encompasses all aspects of wellbeing, including physical, mental, social, and spiritual well. Both individual health outcomes and social inequities are influenced by factors operating at different scales (Metcalf, S. 2022).

Parks and other types of green space are frequently valued primarily for their practical use in Western civilization, which measures their worth in terms of ecological services, recreational opportunities, or property value. (Metcalf, S. 2022). For instance, community gardens could be considered to have aesthetic or agricultural value. Even though the possession of such a site can be a contentious issue, green space might be a place where there is mutual understanding. It causes division both spiritually and practically. (Metcalf, S. 2022). We as humans create architecture and often when we have no user for it anymore we leave it abandoned. This creates the idea that when things are old or broken we throw them away instead of creating something from it.

A greenspace that I believe relates greatly to this consent is the New York High Line. The concept of this design was taking a run-down, decaying neighborhood and creating it into a space everyone can embrace. This originated from the lush greenery, which completely changed the area. The High Line, an elevated railroad track that has been renovated, is now New York's top tourist destination. More than 20 million people have visited the High Line since it first opened in 2009; it is currently accessible across a length of 2.4 kilometers with the completion of the third phase in September 2014. (Appl, R., 2022). This not only enhances the New York space but as well as creating an environmentally friendly environment for the people within this city. This once high traffic area had turned into an abandoned place that no one wanted to look at but now this space can allow users to embrace the world around them. Around 1930, the New York High Line was built with the intention of reducing the hazards brought on by on-street freight trains. With the help of the City of New York, they were able to transform the elevated railway track into a lovely park.
